Costs & Information

"Elizabeth McClancy's portraits have eloquently captured some essential kernel of each of the politicians
she painted.  And in much the same way, her clever juxtaposition of the words and images of such a
complex and varied group has vividly rendered a picture of the Democratic Party heading into 2008."
John F. Kerry, U. S. Senator, from his Foreword to Democratic Principles: Portraits & Essays

Democratic Principles, debuted on April, 2008, as
a featured exhibition at Chicago's famed ARTropolis.

The exhibition, like the book, is designed, as Senator Kerry says, as a "juxtaposition of...words and images."
The LABELS for each painting go beyond the conventional information to include a statement from each subject
on a principle of democracy, applied to a 21st century challenge.  As you will see from the examples below,

each compelling NONPARTISAN statement deals with a fundamental principle of "small-d" democracy.

Governor Howard Dean, Chair of the Democratic National Committee

“…You need to remember that Martin Luther King was not just an ideal that we all worked towards in terms of inclusion and treating people properly. …He was a human being. It was thirteen years between the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the signing of the Civil Rights Bill. Thirteen years. Not every day was a good day for Dr. King and his folks during those thirteen years. There were a lot of times that [they] had to get up and dust themselves off and go out and do something else that was really tough. And not all of them survived that.”
Yearly Kos Convention.  August 2, 2007

Senator Barbara Boxer of California
Elizabeth McClancy, 2006
Oil on Canvas, 14” X 18”
Democratic Principles Series, No. 9
“I have a vision for my eleven-year-old grandson and for my new grandson who is expected in a few weeks. My vision is that these children and yours will grow up and be able to know the gifts of nature that we saved for them. That they will understand we made the right choice for them—we protected the planet that is their home. That because of our action they will not be shackled into fighting wars over the last drops of water or oil or remaining acres of arable cropland.”
National Press Club.  April 18, 2007

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia
Elizabeth McClancy, 2006
Oil on Canvas, 18” X 14”
Democratic Principles Series, No. 5

“I plead with the American public to tune in to what is happening in this country. Please forget the political party with which you may usually be associated, and, instead, think about the right of due process, the presumption of innocence, and the right to a private life. Forget the now tired political spin that, if one does not support warrantless spying, then one may be less than patriotic. Focus on what’s happening to truth in this country.”
Seeking the Truth on Spying on Americans at Home.  February 15, 2006
